He was appointed Lecturer in 2006, Reader in 2013 and Professor in 2016. Previously, he undertook roles as a visiting research scientist at the Robert Koch Institute (Berlin, Germany) as well as the University of California San Francisco (USA). Julian is currently Professor of Fungal Pathogenesis and Immunology in the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions, Faculty of Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at King’s College London. His current research projects relate to the molecular analysis of host-pathogen interactions at mucosal surfaces, with specific focus on epithelial mechanisms activated by the human fungal pathogen C. albicans. His laboratory described the danger response signalling pathways activated by the invasive hyphal form of C. albicans, which recently was found to be due to the secretion of candidalysin. Candidalysin is the first cytolytic peptide toxin identified in any human fungal pathogen and has been recognised as a seminal advance in the microbiology field. His research is supported by grants from the Medical Research Council (MRC), Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Wellcome Trust. Professor Naglik’s research has received awards from King's College London, the German Mycological Society, Heinz Maurer-Prize award, and the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology. Dr. Annapurna Vyakarnam is Visiting Professor Centre for Infectious Disease Research Indian Institute of Science, CV Raman Avenue, Bangalore, India and Adjunct Professor at St John’s Research Institute St John’s Hospital Medical School, Bangalore & National Institute for TB Research, Chennai, India. Her laboratory probes host pathogen interactions and adaptive immunity pertinent to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and HIV-tuberculosis (TB) coinfection. Specifically she focus on understanding CD4 T cell function, which is a key orchestrator of immunity to both HIV and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and plays a central role in disease process. Tuberculosis (TB) is the most important opportunistic infectious disease in HIV infected subjects, especially in TB endemic areas, like India and South Africa. TB in these patients may result from reactivation of latent infection or from new infection. While most opportunistic infections tend to present late in the course of HIV infection when CD4 T cell counts have declined, the risk of TB is substantially increased at all stages of HIV infection including those with preserved CD4 T cell counts. Consequently, HIV infection has dramatically increased TB incidence globally. Given the global increase in multidrug resistant (MDR) TB, there is strong consensus in the scientific community and funding bodies of the need to improve our understanding of the mechanisms that drive selective early presentation of TB in HIV+ve patients and the associated need to develop effective therapeutic strategies in the treatment of HIV-TB coinfection.

Dr. Hagensee earned his MD and PhD from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed an internal medicine residency and a fellowship in infectious diseases at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle, Washington. From 1994 to 1996, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Research Center and an instructor in the division of Infectious diseases at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospital. He joined the faculty of LSU School of Medicine in 1996 as an assistant professor in the section of infectious diseases. Dr. Hagansee’s laboratory is studying the interaction of EBV and HPV in the development of cervical dysplasia in HIV, looking for ways to improve existing HPV serological assays, and examining the role of EBV in HPV-related cervical dysplasia in HIV-negative women. He is board certified in both internal medicine and infectious diseases. Research Interests : The Hagensee laboratory studies the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in human malignancies. Studies are focused on the increase in HPV-related cervical cancer in HIV+ women and the increase in oral cancer in HIV+ men and women. A new area of focus is the role of HPV in anal cancer from basic biology to clinical trials and similar increases in anal cancer rates in HIV+ individuals. This increase may be due, in part, to an interaction with another DNA virus, Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) which also causes human cancers. Current projects include detection of HPV and EBV in clinical specimens, determination of the systemic and local immune response against each virus, in-vitro modeling techniques and development of xenograft mouse models. Results from these studies will aid in improved diagnostics and preventive measures for these cancers. Additional projects include development of self-testing methods to detect HPV DNA to improve cervical cancer screening and studies into improvement of HPV vaccine implementation.
